FriendFeed is down right now. It has been down for the past 30 minutes or so. Sadly, that’s not news anymore. Not because, like Twitter of old, it’s down all the time, but rather, because it seems like no one really uses it anymore. Case in point, it’s been down for over 30 minutes and there are maybe 50 total tweets about it (and several are from the same users).

That means that of all the tens of millions of people around the world on Twitter, a full 50 of them care enough to tweet when FriendFeed is down. It’s hard to imagine any other service that got to the size FriendFeed did (which, granted, wasn’t huge), only getting 50 tweets if it goes down.

It’s sad, really. FriendFeed was easily one of my favorite services (so much so that I’m still waiting for another service to replace it). But since the acquisition by Facebook, it has been a ghost town. And now, with its 500 Internal Server Error, it’s really a ghost town. The impressive team behind FriendFeed (most are still with Facebook now) have indicated they wouldn’t let the service wither, but that seems to be exactly what is happening.

If it comes back up, I wonder how many of these remaining few dozen passionate FriendFeed users that are tweeting will even notice. Maybe they’ll just give up too.

Apple.

The bane of all mobile app developers is the need to rewrite the same app over and over again for different devices: the iPhone, Android, Blackberry, Palm Pre, Nokia, Windows Mobile. Adobe is positioning its Flash platform (which includes the Flash player, AIR, developer tools, and media servers) as the write-once, deploy-anywhere solution for both the mobile Web and apps. Today at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, it will announce plans to bring Adobe AIR to mobile devices, starting with Android and Blackberry phones.

AIR is currently used to create desktop applications, but it will soon be used to create Android and Blackberry apps as well. These mobile AIR apps will be able store data locally on the phone, access other data on the phones such as photos, and be distributed as regular apps in the Android and Blackberry app stores. Not only that, but the same apps created with Flash developer tools will be exportable as iPhone apps. Adobe wants developers to create their apps using its developer tools and then output them as AIR apps for Android and Blackberry phones, native iPhone apps, or Flash apps on the Web.

Apple App Store

Twelve of the world’s biggest phone networks – including AT&T, Orange and Telefonica – will announce their rival technology tomorrow to Apple’s App Store. The combined audience for the app platform will be 2 billion customers. Phone manufacturers Samsung, LG and Sony Ericsson are also part of the alliance.

The announcement is expected to take place at tomorrow’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, writes the Times, and will be good news for consumers. With the fragmentation of app stores from Apple, Android and others, many handsets and operators will now support a single standard of apps that work across multiple devices.

There’s no word if there will be a single app store, but a single standard for apps on devices from multiple networks is expected. It’s also unclear if the technology itself will be unveiled tomorrow — we may simply see a statement of intent.

Live From Yahoo SearchSpeak 2010

http://techcrunch.com/2010/02/10/yahoo-2010-search-event/

We’re here at Yahoo’s Sunnyvale, CA headquarters for an event the company is holding called “SearchSpeak” to talk about, you guessed it: their search product.

Speaking here are:

  • Shashi Seth, Senior Vice President of Search Products, Yahoo!
  • Prabhakar Raghavan, Senior Vice President of Yahoo! Labs and Yahoo! Search Strategy
  • Larry Cornett, Vice President, Consumer Products, Yahoo! Search
  • David Pann, Vice President of Search Advertising, Yahoo!

According to the pamphletes we’ve been handed, Yahoo will be focusing on a three main issues in search today:

  • “Find Things Faster”
  • “Explore What Matters”
  • “Get Things Done”

Find our live notes below (paraphrased):

Shashi Seth – Senior Vice President of Search Products - (joined about 3 weeks ago): I came for a few reasons, first I wanted to be a part of the team that changes search. Also the quality of talent and leadership. Today we’re going to talk about the talent we’ve assembled with the Yahoo Labs team. We’re also going to talk about the products we’ve built in the past but maybe haven’t shared. And finally search advertising.

I wanted to clear out some misconceptions. One is that with the Microsoft Yahoo deal, Yahoo may not be in the game of search. We are.

Still out, but we’re still going.

Yahoo has been in search, is in search, and will continue to be in the future. We’ll continue to drive innovation. It’s our stake in the ground. You’ll see some of this today.

Search has been largely the same for the past 10 years. It’s mostly the same for the user. With the Microsoft deal we can get the backend from them and innovate on top of it. It’s nice not having to focus on the backend. It frees us up. I think search is headed for innovation on the frontend side. And we started that journey about a year and a half to two years ago. But there still is a lot of work we need to do for this transition (assuming it’s approved).

TechCrunch заблокировали в Китае

Over the past 48 hours, and perhaps longer, it appears that TechCrunch is being blocked inside China. We’ve confirmed this with contacts and tipsters inside China who can no longer access our site, as well as through Web tools such as WebsitePulse and Just Ping which pings sites from inside China’s Great Firewall.

Both of those services indicate that, at least in Shanghai, readers cannot connect to TechCrunch. Chinese readers have reported problems accessing the site in the past as well.

If you are located in China and you can read this, please let us know in comments.

We are not really sure why we are being blocked. Recently, we’ve covered Google’s decision to to perhaps stop doing business in China following a cyberattack on its servers in the country, but we don’t think that is it.
